Mindful Pet Food’s Humble Beginnings...
My 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Darby was the inspiration behind Mindful Dog Food. She was the spark to get me thinking consciously about how I was feeding my dog.
After much research I came up with a formula of quality, human grade chicken, long grain brown rice, organic vegetables, garlic and a combination of supplements. Darby loved the food instantly! She now looked forward to her meals.
In the following months I saw an incredible change in my little friend. Darby had energy again! She seemed years younger. Just as Pete and I were anticipating the slower, declining health years for our dog, she rebounded! Darby plays like a puppy again! She is alert and showing a zest for life I realized had been missing for the past few years.
Suddenly friends were asking about her…. what were we doing? Only weeks before it seemed we were facing some tough decisions about Darby’s health, and now she was a ball of energy!!
When I told everyone about my food, they asked if I could include meals for their dogs on food making day!
I began making batches for many friends and that turned to friends of friends…. I decided to name the food MINDFUL, it reflected a new conscious way of caring for our pets. No more blindly buying food for our pets-we wanted to give our dogs the same level of nutrition we would want for ourselves. I hear wonderful stories about the dogs that are benefiting from MINDFUL DOG FOOD all the time.
Our dogs are members of our family; we are members of their pack. Why wouldn’t we want to treat them to the best nutrition available to them? It is our way of saying thank you to our humble companions, the friends at our feet and in our hearts- the ones that love us unconditionally.

Darby’s Story
In January 2008, my dog Darby started winking at me. At first I thought it was cute-maybe her way of communicating with her faithful companion of almost 14 years. I soon learned I was wrong. Darby’s eye started tearing, and she began to rub her eye. I took her to my vet assuming she had an infection. My vet was surprised to see Darby actually had a large tumor growing in her right eye. It had split her cornea and was likely causing her a great deal of discomfort. It could be cancerous. Pete and I were heading out of town for the weekend and needed to decide how to proceed. I decided to do a little research over the weekend. Once I began I could not stop. I was suddenly bombarded with information about how awful commercial dog food was! I could not stop reading…. how could I be feeding my sweet little dog such awful things? Even the top dollar food from my veterinarian’s office was suspect. I decided before returning home that weekend I would begin to develop my own formula of food for Darby effective immediately.
We also decided to have Darby’s eye removed. The tumor was benign. We were relieved. She healed quickly.
Darby is still doing well at 15 years of age. She plays with her toys and always looks forward to her mealtimes. Her story is one of success!
